The government won some rare relief on Saturday when a Delhi court threw out the corruption case against Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram ahead of crucial elections in Uttar Pradesh next week. Pakistan's Supreme Court on Thursday prepared to charge the prime minister with contempt of court for his failure to re-open corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari, breaking an uneasy calm of political tension with the judiciary. (GS) director charged with insider trading as part of the Galleon Group LLC probe, filed a demand for a jury trial in the civil case brought against him by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.  The SEC claims Gupta, 63, gave Raj Rajaratnam, the convicted Galleon co-founder, information about Berkshire Hathaway Inc. A Pennsylvania businessman, who is in jail in connection with a murder-for-hire plot, is urging a state court to reduce his $25 million bail after the plea was denied by a lower court. Paul R. Vangore, of Abington, Pa., is accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill a man he suspected was his wife's lover and two of the man's friends, The Times Herald reported.
Ravi Shankar, an associate professor of English at the Central Connecticut State University, was back in court Jan. 12 for a hearing in his larceny case. The 36-year-old, who was suspended Aug. 30 from his more-than-$70,000-a-year job, is accused of attempted first-degree larceny, second-degree false statement and making a criminal attempt to tamper with physical evidence.
